The snow came to Virellis in the first week of December, and it did not stop.

Lydia had not seen snow like it since she was a girl. It came down out of a low white sky for three days without a pause, soft and heavy and silent, and it filled the broken streets and the gutters of the rooftop gardens and the ring of small stones in the middle of the square, and it lay on the cathedral’s ruined dome like a second roof.
